This Agadir to Marrakech Sahara Journey is the most scenic way to travel between Morocco’s favourite beach city and its most iconic imperial city. Instead of a straight coastal drive, you go inland, deep through ancient kasbahs, across the Road of 1,000 Kasbahs, and all the way to the Sahara. Night one is in the Dadès Valley. Night two is in the desert at Merzouga.
On day three, you return west through the Dadès Valley and cross the High Atlas into Marrakech. As a result, you cover three completely different sides of Morocco in one seamless journey. This Agadir to Marrakech Sahara Journey suits travelers who want to move between the two cities, and see everything worth seeing along the way.
The Agadir to Marrakech Sahara Journey begins early. Pickup is at your Agadir hotel around 7:00–8:00 AM. Right away, the Atlantic coast disappears behind you. First, the road climbs inland through Taroudant a walled city known as “little Marrakech”, with its ancient ramparts and bustling souks. It’s a good first stop. Not far beyond, the road passes through Taliouine, the world capital of saffron. The fields stretch out in purple at harvest time. It’s one of those places most tourists never reach.
From there, this Shared 3 Day Agadir to Marrakech desert tour continues east through Taznakht, famous for its hand-woven Berber carpets, and into the pre-Saharan plains. By mid-morning, Aït Ben Haddou appears. It rises straight from the valley floor, a UNESCO-listed fortress of mud brick and ancient towers. You walk through it with a local guide. Afterwards, if you have energy, hike to the hilltop viewpoint above the village. The view from up there is genuinely one of the best in Morocco.
After lunch, you continue through Ouarzazate, a brief stop at the Atlas Film Studios, the largest in the world, then head east along the Road of 1,000 Kasbahs. The afternoon takes you through the Rose Valley, past Kalaa M’Gouna, and into the Dadès Valley as the light turns red and low. First night is in a kasbah-style hotel or riad in the Dadès Gorge. Dinner is included. The rock formations here glow at sunset.
Day two of this 3-day group desert tour from Agadir starts with the Todra Gorge. The walls rise 300 metres on both sides. The morning light inside the canyon does extraordinary things. There’s time to walk through it properly before continuing east. From there, the landscape empties out. Towns get smaller. The road gets quieter. You pass through Tinghir’s palm groves, then Tinjdad, then Erfoud, the fossil capital and last outpost before the Sahara.
By late afternoon, the dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon. Everyone in the van tends to go quiet at this point. It happens every time. You leave your main luggage at the auberge, pack an overnight bag, and mount a camel as the sun starts dropping. The hour-long trek into the dunes at golden hour is the heart of this Agadir to Marrakech Sahara Journey. The silence is almost total. The colours shift from gold to amber to deep red. You arrive at the Berber camp just before dark.
That evening, dinner is a full traditional Moroccan spread under the open sky. Afterwards, there’s live Berber drumming around the fire. Above you, the sky has no light pollution at all. In other words, more stars than you’ve likely ever seen. Someone wakes you before dawn on day three. Climb a dune in the dark. Then watch the Sahara go from black to purple to burning orange in about twenty minutes. After that, the camel brings you back for breakfast.
Day three heads west toward Marrakech via the Dadès Valley. First, you stop in Rissani, the ancient capital of the Tafilalet. Then the route retraces through Erfoud and west along the Road of 1,000 Kasbahs. Ancient earthen towers and Berber villages line the road. Next comes Ouarzazate, a brief stop before the final push north. Afterwards, you reach Aït Ben Haddou once more, stunning in the late afternoon light. Finally, the road climbs into the High Atlas. The views on this last stretch are spectacular. By early evening, the red plains of Marrakech appear below. Drop-off at your hotel or riad shortly after.
